INTRODUCTION
Chemistry is the branch of Science dealing with chemicals
and their properties. These chemicals include Metals, Non-Metals
and Gases. Chemistry can be divided into three main branches namely
Physical Chemistry
Inorganic Chemistry
Organic Chemistry
Knowledge of Chemistry is used in Industries such as Petroleum,
Rubber, Plastics, Paint, Textiles, Dye and Drug making companies.
NATURE
OF WORK
The study of Chemistry involves chemical analysis, synthesis,
research and sampling of solids, liquids or gases for determining
their composition, properties, physical and chemical changes.
This study is used in development of new products through improved
new production processes and advanced scientific research. They
also work on research projects for improving methods of production
and for devising new products.
PERSONAL
ATTRIBUTES
Chemistry requires a lot of experimental work in laboratory as
well as intense research, hence aspiring people must have good
grasp of scientific concepts and a consistent academic record.
Analytical bent of mind, perseverance, hard working and curious
bent of mind are required.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Chemists can work in R and D, Production, Teaching, Marketing
and various other fields. They can find jobs in Textile, petroleum,
Rubber, Pharma, Food, Fertilizers and Cosmetic Industries. They
can also work in the field of Molecular Biology, Biotechnology
and Polymer Chemistry.
Chemistry graduates are also recruited for Army Ordinance Corps.
Chemistry is also an option for C.S.E.
COURSES
OFFERED
Chemistry is offered as a core subject of Science group at +2
level. At U.G. level students can opt for Chemistry as a subject
of their study. A student can choose to specialize in one of the
following subjects offered
ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
INORGANIC CHEMISTRY
PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY
INDUSTRIAL CHEMISTRY
MEDICAL LAB TECHNOLOGY
SUGAR TECHNOLOGY
FOOD TECHNOLOGY
TEXTILE CHEMISTRY
PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY
INSTITUTES/COLLEGES
Most of the
Universities offer Chemistry at U.G. as well as P.G. level. Given
here is a
list of Institutes which offers specialized courses in Chemistry
or fields requiring Graduation in Chemistry/Science.
