INTRODUCTION
Forest are the vast source of trees, timbers and also serves as
a home for animals, various tribes and forest dwellers. Basic
function of foresters is the management of forest resources through
use of different techniques. They are engaged in preservation
and utilization of forest resources.
NATURE
OF WORK
Foresters are involved in the mapping, of forested areas. They
prepare documents about forest resources, wild animals in forests.
They are responsible for the protection of forests from campers
and poachers. They maintain all the technical data related to
forests.
PERSONAL
ATTRIBUTES
People willing to work as foresters should be interested in environment,
ecology, wild life and conservation. They need to have good people's
skill, good physique; physical fitness and mental fitness are
required.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
Job opportunities exist in Private and Public Sector Organizations,
Forest based Industries, Research and Consultancy Industries,
Development Organizations, NGO's, etc.
People can also join Indian forest services for which an All India
Entrance Examination is conducted by UPSC.
COURSES OFFERED
Forestry can be pursued as a 3 year /4 year course at graduation
level, after which specialization in subjects related to forestry,
can be done at P.G. level.
There are some specialized institutes which offer specialized
courses in forestry and related fields after graduation.
Apart from regular course in forestry, people interested in this
field
can also join Indian Forest Services, for which an all India level
Exam is conducted by UPSC. The examination is a three stage process
comprising of Screening Test, Main Examination and Interviews
.Selected candidates are trained for a period of 1 year after
which they are posted as Probationary Officers for 2 years after
which they are given full fledged charge of a forest under one
Division.
