SECTION-A (READING)

A.1. Read the following passage carefully:

ASTHMA: MYTHS AND TRUTHS

The word ‘Asthma’ seems to strike terror in the hearts of many. There are umpteen myths surrounding asthma, and it is important that doctors and patients accept the diagnosis, so that the unwary do not fall prey to quacks, who offer miracle cures.

Asthma is disease of the airways (the small tubes which take air to the balloon like alveoli, where oxygen is exchanged for carbon dioxide). These airways become red and inflamed due to many reason, which include allergy to dust, pollen, cold, humidity, food, stress, etc. With this inflammation, these airways become narrow and secrete mucous which leads to an obstruction of airflow and the classic wheezing sound and the breathlessriess associated with asthma. There is usually some cough, as the lungs are trying to clear the mucous from the lungs. But all wheezes and coughs are not asthma and a specialist is often required to differentiate asthma from other heart and lung diseases.

There is no doubt that if asthma is not treated, there may be permanent damage to the lungs and a person may end up needing more and more medication or even oxygen. But if asthma is treated regularly, the damage can be prevented.

One of the safest treatments in modern medicine has been the advent of inhalers for asthma. Very low doses of the drug are delivered to the area where they are required (lungs). The drugs have minimal or no side effects if used properly. There are preventive and reliever medications in inhalers and both may need to be used depending on the situation. Various kinds of inhalers are available and most are reasonably priced. More than 99 per cent of asthmatics can lead a normal life with the help of inhalers. Difficult asthmatics may also require medication. Devices like peak flow metre and nebulisers can be used at home for monitoring and controlling asthma.

A.1.1. On the basis of your reading of the passage, answer the following questions as briefly as possible:

(a) What do the quacks offer to the unwary asthma patients?

(b) What does the asthma disease entail?

A.2. Read the given passage carefully:

 RAGGING-What is it all about?

These days a lot is being seen and read in the newspapers about ‘Ragging’ Everyone is aware of the Supreme Court’s directions about punishing anyone caught indulging in ragging, but few people can actually define the thin line of demarcation between ragging and a casual introduction between seniors and freshers.

There are two extremes to everything and ragging is no exception. But sadly, sometimes, even a formal introduction demanded of the fresher is very labeled as ragging. But don’t we begin with our introduction at any new place we go to.

That is the first step to knowing someone. How ever, at educational institutions and elsewhere, courtesy demands that the session of introduction should begin from people who are already a part of the institution so that the new comer feels comfortable.

I remember when I entered college, the seniors helped me to get known in the college, and in a short while the exchange of introductions ensured that almost all of my seniors knew me and I also came to know most of my alumni.

In a world of today-when everyone speaks of friendship and fellowship why can’t we realize that this is just a part of getting to know one another? Only when interactions happen can one become a friend. And if one does not want that to happen too, forget friendship-one is not worth it. By all this I am not encouraging ragging of the type which tortures and humiliates a fresher because as a student, I don’t approve of it. But we must realize that there is a difference between ragging and an informal introduction where the stress is on breaking the ice and getting to know each other. This kind of ragging is a part of college life, particularly so in a professional college where the associations and friendships, the relations between a junior and senior is bonded for the entire professional life, and I dare say that on numerous occasions this is firmer than genetic bonds of person. The first few days for a fresher also happens to be the time to learn about the traditions, rules and regulations, customs and culture of the newly joined alma mater.

Everyone goes through this stage of life. But we must learn to take it in our stride. The first year has its scares and surprises but don’t let it harms those relationship of yours which are yet to grow and bloom. Fight injustice by all means, but first carefully distinguish the right from the wrong.

At the end of the day if you are true to yourself nothing can stop you from reaching the acme of success.
