KGMCICE was started as the Clinical Epidemiology Unit (CEU) IN THE
LATE 1980s, when the college was selected by the International Clinical
Epidemiology Network (INCLEN) as one of its constituent institutions.
INCLEN is an organization devoted to improving the health of populations
around the world by training clinicians in the methods of epidemiology,
clinical research and critical appraisal. This is expected to raise
the quality of care provided by the clinician and to encourge him
to undertake high qulity research in relevant national health problems.
These trained clinicians are then expected to train others so that
the message is passed on. To this end, INCLEN has trained a handful
of teachers from each selected medical college in the principles
of clinical Epidemiology, Health Economics, Health Social Science
and Biostatistics, at centers in North America and Australia, and
set up Clinical Epidemiology Units in these colleges. There are
thus over 50 CEUs all over the developing world, of which 6 are
in India (together called India CLEN), and KGMC is one of them.
The 1st teachers from KGMC were trained by INCLEN in 1987 - 88 and
in 1991, the CEU was formally inaugurated in its present premises
in the Administrative Block of the college. In 1996, the CEU was
upgraded as the KGMCICE. In December 1999 this center was chosen
for the establishment of "Centre for Excellence in Clinical Research"
by Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd.
