Ayurveda is renowned ancient system of medicine practised from time immemorial in India. It is now increasingly referred to Indian system of medicine.

There is a valid general impression that this system of treatment would cure various ailments with out adverse side effects. Ayurveda is now popular more particularly in the European Countries like West Germany. The use of natural material such as herbs, leaves, seed oil and roots and the absence of chemicals is perhaps the source of new found popularity in Ayurveda.

This system of medicine could not become so popular as anticipated in terms of practice and the institutions towards establishment and propogation of this system were too meagre when compared to Allopathic Medical Colleges. At present there is only one Ayurvedic Medical College in Bangalore. Since the hospital of this college belongs to the State Government, the scope for development and research is very limited. Due to existence of limited number of colleges in the country, the Indian system of Medicine could not be effectively adopted for development and research of Ayurvedic System. Prior to the entry of Britishers to India, Ayurveda was very much in practice. However it was relegated considerably due to influence of the Allopathic system introduced by the Britishers who ruled the country.

The predominant existence of Allopathy system could not give much scope for research in this system. With the objective of popularising the Ayurvedic system through professional Education, Research & Development our institution - Indian Institute of Ayurvedic Medicine and Research came into existance.

The inspiration behind the establishment of this institution is the well-known indomitable administrator and leader of the nation who has encouraged the Trust and emphasised his devotion to the cause of this professional education. The main idea of starting of this Ayurvedic Medical College is not only the propogation of Ayurvedic Medical Education but also initiate Research & Development on Indian Medicine.
